We invite you to be part of our next America's Wild Read book club discussion on Thursday, February 27 at 3 PM ET, where we will discuss A Woman Among Wolves with the author, Diane K. Boyd. Please register in advance. Whether you’re drawn to nature, memoirs, or want to learn more about wolves, this book promises a thought-provoking conversation. Don’t miss out — bring your insights and join fellow readers for a rich discussion. We hope to see you there!
Determined, courageous, and passionate wildlife biologist Diane Boyd, studied and advocated for wolves in the wilds of Montana near Glacier National Park. When she began her career in the 1970s, she was the only female biologist in the United States researching and radio collaring wolves. This beautifully written book offers a fascinating look into the early days of wolf research to present day challenges of wolf management and Boyd’s explorations of the intricate balance of human and wolf coexistence.
Let's begin our adventure in the wild world of wolf conservation with the following questions at our book club meeting:
Discussion Questions
- How has A Woman Among Wolves changed or deepened your understanding of wolves and their role in the wild?
- As you were reading, did you find any parallels between your own experiences and Boyd’s story? How do you relate to her journey?
- What do you think the recovery of wolves in the U.S. tells us about the broader relationship between humans and wildlife? How can we balance conservation efforts with the needs of local communities while ensuring wolves have a safe and sustainable future?
- What can we learn about managing conflict (between humans and animals, or humans and humans) from A Woman Among Wolves?
- How can we shift the narrative around wolves from being a threat to being an essential part of the ecosystem? What steps can we take to foster respect for wolves as integral members of the landscape?
Brought to you by the USFWS Library, America's Wild Read is a virtual book club where we aim to inspire you to engage with conservation literature and nature writing. We hope you will read along with us as we feature various conservation books every quarter — contemporary, traditional, new, and classic.
