Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery recently hosted an engaging Fossil ID Workshop, drawing a crowd of fossil enthusiasts, families, and curious learners. The event provided an exciting opportunity for attendees to delve into the fascinating world of paleontology, with hands-on activities and expert guidance.
Hatchery volunteer and fossil enthusiast Scott Morris kicked off the workshop with an informative overview of fossils, explaining how these ancient remains tell the story of life millions of years ago. Though primarily focusing on local fossils, Scott also showcased unique specimens he has collected through his travels across the U.S., including petrified wood and coprolites (fossilized poop!) for the kids to see. The workshop also featured Dr. David Meyer, a University of Cincinnati Geology Professor Emeritus, who along with his wife Kani, played a key role in identifying a variety of fossils brought in by attendees. Dr. Meyer shared his expertise, offering a deep dive into the most common fossils found in the local area including crinoids, brachiopods, corals, bryozoans, and more! His insights helped participants better understand how these organisms lived and became fossilized over time.
In addition to fossil identification, kids were able to enjoy hands-on crafts and activities. Digging for their own fossil, each child was able to leave with a real fossil as a keepsake! Other fun activities included fossil-themed coloring pages, fossil stenciling, and a fossil story hour provided by the Russell County Public Library, where kids learned about prehistoric creatures through storytelling.
This workshop not only educated participants about local fossils but also fostered a sense of wonder and curiosity about the natural world. It was an excellent way for community members to connect with science, history, and nature in a fun and interactive environment! A special thanks to our volunteers, Dr. David Meyer, and the Friends of Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery, Inc. for their support and partnership to offer this fun day of learning!
