Spending a morning outdoors near the creek is a great way to relax and have fun during spring break! Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery's Fishing 101 for Kids class incorporated fun, curiosity, kindness, citizenship, and fishing!
The morning started with introductions, as volunteers were paired with their students. Students were given a new fishing pole and tackle box, and with the help of volunteers, they learned how to string a rod, tie on a hook, add a sinker and finally, a bobber. Once the new poles were ready, the participants headed to Hatchery creek to practice casting, setting a hook, and reeling in a fish! Experienced volunteers shared fishing etiquette rules and specific tips for catching trout.
Some kids caught fish, others did not, but one thing for sure-there were lots of smiles and fun (not only from the kids).
Special thanks to the friends of Friends of Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery, Inc. for sponsoring this event and providing the poles, tackle boxes, and gear for the volunteers! Thanks, as well to our wonderful volunteers that are so good to show up and help at our events.
