Overview
Northern hawk owls are found year-round across much of Alaska and Canada, plus parts of far northern Minnesota and Maine. Since they breed in remote locations, have low population density and make sporadic movements, they're difficult to study and are considered one of the least understood birds in North America.
Unlike many owls, northern hawk owls have symmetrical ears. They rely more on sight than hearing so they hunt during the day - typically from perches in open habitats. These owls will often travel away from their typical range in the winter in search of food.
