Strix nebulosa

Overview

Great gray owls can be found year-round through much of Alaska and Canada, plus parts of the west and northern Minnesota. These owls spend time in dense northern evergreen forests and hunt along meadows, bogs and other open areas. They eat a variety of mammals including voles, mice, moles, chipmunks and lemmings. While hunting they listen carefully from perches, then jump on prey with their talons and gulp it down!
