Fifty years ago…. the year is 1975. You might be doing “The Hustle” on the dancefloor, going to see The Rocky Horror Picture Show or Jaws in cinemas, and listening to Bohemian Rapsody by Queen. Microsoft is founded, the Rubik's Cube invented, and Muhammad Ali takes on Joe Frazier in the “Thrilla in Manila".
Why the reminiscing? Why 1975? Not mentioned above, 1975 is the year that Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery started raising trout! For 50 years now, Wolf Creek NFH has been raising trout to stock in public fishing waters across the state of Kentucky. The first year, no stockings took place because it takes time for fish to grow, but Wolf Creek NFH began its distribution program with fingerling rainbow trout stockings in 1976. The catchable rainbow trout program began in 1977 when the first lot of fingerlings reached a suitable size. Initially, rainbow trout was the only species reared at Wolf Creek NFH. Today, we raise brown, brook and rainbow trout.
Fishing has always been one of America’s leading forms of outdoor recreation. The primary responsibility of Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery, from 1975 to the present, is to raise trout which will help preserve this tradition for present as well as future generations of Americans.
