Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery's Environmental Education/Outreach Specialist Makenzie Foster attended the 18th Annual Kentuckiana Fly Fishing Show in Shepherdsville, KY. Hosted by the Derby City Fly Fishers, this is an all-day event that highlights entities in the region that offer services to those in the fly-fishing community. Over 40 vendors and exhibitors attend the show including fishing guide services, fly-tying groups, fly shops, and guest speakers who provided scheduled seminars. Hands on demonstrations included casting instruction and a make-and-take fly tying station for kids. Seminars scheduled throughout the day included Fly Fishing 101, Intro to Derby City, Fly Fishing the Cumberland River, Advanced Euro Nymphing, KY Fishing the Rolling Fork River, and Salmon Fishing Pierre-Marquette River.
At Wolf Creek NFH's booth, attendees learned the breadth of the hatchery's contribution to Kentucky's fly-fishing enthusiasts. As the only federal hatchery in the state, Wolf Creek is the sole provider of trout in the state of Kentucky; stocking just under a million rainbow, brown, and brook trout per year. Locally, the hatchery is renowned for the stocking of Hatchery Creek. Many anglers attending the event shared stories and pictures of their best catches from the creek, applauding Hatchery Creek for being "an exceptional fishery", and their "favorite to fish in the state." Those who have experience fishing for trout in streams out west were especially impressed with Hatchery Creek, stating how remarkable it is to have a fishery so similar to those in the eastern part of the U.S.
Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery is proud to offer fishing opportunities throughout the state of Kentucky.
