The Prairie's Edge Wildlife Drive offers a great way to see wildlife and habitats from the comfort of your car. By using your car as a viewing blind, you can often see more wildlife than you can see on foot. Depending on the time of year, you can spot fields of lupine or other wildflowers blooming, trumpeter swans feeding, turtles sunning themselves or laying their eggs or warblers singing along the 0.5 mile Woodland Trail.
While you enjoy the drive, please remember that the speed limit is 20 mph. For a more immersive experience, we encourage you to roll down your windows and make stops along the route. You can look out over a designated overlook, hike on any of the three short trail loops, or pull to a side of the road and shut your vehicle's doors to enjoy the view anywhere along the drive.
This 7.3 mile route is open to hiking and biking year-round. It is open to vehicles from April 1 - November 30, as winter weather and road conditions allow. The Wildlife Drive is closed to vehicles from December 1 - March 31 and during the nine-day firearm deer season in November. Note that horses, ATVs, UTVs and all other off-highway vehicles (OHVs) are not allowed on the Wildlife Drive.
