The Jocelyn Nungaray National Wildlife Refuge is renowned as one of the top birdwatching destinations in the United States, especially during the spring migration. Thousands of warblers and other passerine migrants travel nonstop from the Yucatan Peninsula to this part of Texas, where they stop to rest, bathe, and refuel.

A wide variety of birds nest at the refuge, including herons, egrets, rails, owls, and ibis, as well as several species of waterfowl. There’s always something to see.

During the fall and winter months, the refuge is home to ten's of thousands of ducks, geese, shore birds, and raptors. It's not uncommon to spot fifteen species of waterfowl in a single day, along with bald eagles, various falcon species, hawks, owls, and numerous wading birds.
