In addition to the diverse population of birds, Cedar Island is home to a variety of other wildlife. Mammal species include otter, raccoon, muskrat, opossum, fox, rabbits, and white-tailed deer. Ninety-two amphibian and reptile species, including several frog, snake, alligator, salamander, and turtle species, occur on the refuge. Cedar Island also has an outstanding reputation for insects. A variety of hardy mosquitoes abound almost year-round. The insects are a valuable food source for many species of wildlife.
