Purple bean mussels with tags before release in Indian Creek, Tazewell County, Virginia

These thumbnail-sized purple bean mussels (Villosa perpurpurea) were reared and tagged at the Aquatic Wildlife Conservation Center in Marion, Virginia, and then released to Indian Creek, Tazewell County, Virginia on October 7, 2011. The purple bean is federally listed as threatened.
