In the 19th century and into the early 20th century, wetlands were associated with higher mortality rates as a result of what we now understand to be vector-borne malaria. This association, along with misunderstandings about the relationship between soil ecology and the water cycle, shaped historical perspectives of wetlands as less than desirable.
