Kalama Creek

A thin creek flows vertically through the image’s center, disappearing quickly into lush green growth and trees. Above and beside the creek, moss-covered tree branches and trunks, ferns, and groundcover criss-cross. A slight drizzle and the creek’s rocky bottom disrupt the water with ripples.

The Kalama Creek hatchery sits on Nisqually land in what is now known as Olympia. To its east, just beyond the tree line, the Nisqually River flows. Ten miles to the north, these waters empty into the brackish Puget Sound at the Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge.
