Cypress Tupelo Swamp at Roanoke River National Wildlife Refuge

The thick "buttressed" bases of the trunks of cypresses and tupelos provided added stability in weak, muddy ground. Bottomland hardwood swamps are frequently flooded and provide valuable wetland habitat for herons, egrets, wood ducks, and other wildlife.
